Removing Window Air Conditioners in the Fall

Fall has arrived. The long dog days of summer have come and gone, as has our need for those window air conditioning units we have depended on all season. Lest you think you do not really need to remove the unit, know that leaving it in can actually make your home draftier in the winter months because of how they sit in the windows. That should deter you from opting out of the task! But, like most major appliances, care needs to be shown when removing these units from the window, especially if you hope to be able to reuse them next summer.

Here is a simple, step-by-step, guide to removing your window air conditioner.

  1.  Turn off the unit.
  2. Take the front cover, with the filter screen, off and set it aside.
  3. Remove the foam padding that surrounds the sides of your air conditioner. This might involve using the prying end of a hammer to loosen up some of the insulation, which can be thrown away.
  4. Lift the air conditioner up and out of the wall. Seek out help from a friend if you need it, otherwise risk injury. Wear work gloves while doing this.
  5. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the wooden base from the windowsill.
  6. Put the air conditioner and wooden window rest in storage.
  7. Replace the major appliance with a glass windowpane for the season.

Storing Your Air Conditioner For The Winter

Sadly, the time has come again to start winterizing our homes. This means assessing what you won’t need in the fall and winter months and figuring out how to store those that have reached the end of their summer road. The first thing that comes to mind is your AC. As far as major appliances go, this one’s a summer baby for sure! Time for storage. Here are some quality tips for air conditioning storage.

Remember that they’re incredibly heavy! It’s easy to forget how much they weigh and attempt to remove them yourself. This is a surefire way to cause serious bodily harm if you’re not up to the task physically. This is the time to ask for some assistance! Get a burly friend to come help you remove the unit and all will proceed without injury.

Once the unit is removed (remember to place a towel underneath to catch any excess water) clean the filter. This will go a long way towards increasing the life span of this major appliance. Filter cleaning is not all that time consuming and well worth it in the end. Simply vacuum the dust off, run it under lukewarm water and wipe it down gently with a mild soap to prevent allergens from forming.

Now it’s time to find a winter home for your AC. In a cramped apartment this can be a bit tricky, but use your imagination and come up with somewhere that is out of the way and not liable to accumulate debris. Place the unit in a large garbage bag, clean box or even the box it came in to prevent it from getting dirty over the months to come (you don’t want to add to your unpacking time next summer).

Everyone’s trying to save a buck or two these days – what, with the economy the way it is and expenses that can seem endless.  In these times, spending the big bucks on an air conditioning unit for your place can seem like a luxury you can live without. Safely Installing Window Air Conditioners

After you place the A/C so it is stable, pull out the sides to expand to the width of your window. You can then close the window on the A/C. It is smart to place brackets above the bottom window to keep the vibration from sliding it further open. If you have gaps between the top and bottom, there is foam insulation made specifically for that, which you can get at any hardware store.
